The most recent being the 2006 - American School & University’s “Outstanding Buildings, Post Secondary” Awards for two new student apartment buildings at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and the 2004-AIA Honor Award for the Long Beach Aquatics Festival Venue.
Mr. Flood is a two-time national water polo champion and member of the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame and in 2002, he was the recipient of the USA Water Polo’s Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Award for his outstanding achievements and continuing contribution and support of the sports.
In 1980, he was the first-appointed Sports Commissioner for the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles. He was responsible for program planning and operation of aquatic events hosted by 2,000 volunteers for 1,200 athletes and 500,000 spectators. In addition, he developed the programs and plans for the UCLA Olympic Village and the tennis and gymnastic venues. He was the planner/architect for the Los Angeles 2012 and 2016 Olympic Bid Committee.
He was a Director and now Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Yosemite National Institutes, a non-profit educational corporation with campuses located in Yosemite National Park, Marin County, California and Olympic National Park, Washington.
As a past Executive Board member of the United States Olympic Committee, his responsibilities included analysis and planning of USOC Olympic Training Centers in Lake Placid, New York, Colorado Springs, Colorado and the 150-Acre, $90-Million Training Center in San Diego of which he was a Director. He was a founding Director of the Los Angeles Sports Council.
In 1992, David Jay Flood was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. Additionally, he is an AIA California Council Certified Development Strategist.
