California State University Channel Islands Student Housing Phase 2
Camarillo CA
Located in a picturesque valley north of Los Angeles and the site of a former State hospital, the project called for the adaptive reuse of two 1936 concrete Spanish style buildings with infill construction into new student dormitories. The combination of the remodeled original buildings and the new structures yielded 472 beds in 134 units and 131,000 SF. The facility also accommodates faculty and staff apartments, lounges, study areas, meeting rooms, a computer room, recreation room and a laundry.
Student rooms are arranged around a series of courtyards to maximize views, natural ventilation and daylight. Courtyards are landscaped and designed with fountains and seating areas to create outdoor gathering places, reinforcing the campus’ emphasis on community.
The melding and retention of the character and scale of the original architecture with the new construction create a sense of place. The design and use of materials connects the new buildings with those of its surroundings, while the arrangement of spaces enhances the students’ sense of community and campus experience.
