William H. Hannon Library
Loyola Marymount University
Los Angeles CA
Overlooking the Los Angeles basin, the 85,000 SF library will create a new intellectual hub at the university that links the residential and academic campuses. The program includes areas for individual and group study, media, archives, reference collections, electronic resources and 800,000 volumes of printed materials. The conceptual building design also features a café and outdoor amphitheater, which will become a place for students and faculty to gather, study, contemplate or watch performances.
Spaces within the building are oriented toward significant cultural, educational, civic and economic icons around Los Angeles. As a repository of knowledge and information, the library acts as a focal point for those icons. Visual connections from within to those landmarks engage the library visitors in a metaphorical dialogue, thus reinforcing the university’s mission to be an active participant in the unique urban fabric that surrounds it.
