Oliver Ranch Campus in Red Rock Canyon
Las Vegas NV
DJFA was part of a design team to determine the feasibility for an overnight outdoor science school on an existing ranch site. The design team also included representatives from the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Yosemite National Institutes. The 10-acre site was to accommodate housing, classrooms, labs, wild horse and burro facilities, administration, dining, and an observatory in approximately 57,000 sq. ft. of buildings. The design portion of the study involved determining site parameters and opportunities, establishing a program, developing design, planning and environmental concepts, creating alternative site plans, and generating a preliminary budget.
The concept behind the planning and design of the proposed school was to create a sense of place in tune with the surrounding environment, and incorporate sustainable design alternatives that become a tangible learning experience to the children attending the campus.
