Ignatius Commons
Loyola Marymount University

Los Angeles CA

The one-story 4,500 square foot building serves as the gateway to the Jesuit community and establishes a public identity for them on the Loyola Marymount campus. Its architecture, interiors and furnishings reflect the Jesuit Order in their purity and simplicity of design. The interior spaces, both public and religious, reflect the concept of light defining space.
The building houses a lobby/reception area, conference room, oratory and a variety of administrative offices and parlors. The lobby is a small dynamic space bathed in the golden glow of the multi-layered ceilings. Clerestory windows in a variety of shapes and orientations create a continuous ever-changing light show.
The octagonal shaped oratory is defined by intersecting roof ridge skylights, which transition into ceiling-to-floor, butt-glazed windows at each corner. Additional skylights, located at the tops of gracefully outward curving walls allow the interplay of light and shadow to penetrate the oratory. The honey colored wood ceiling provides a warm complement to the white walls, custom inset carpet and simple furnishings.
