Belmont Plaza Aquatics Center
Long Beach CA

An existing pool facility on a beachfront site will be rebuilt to better serve the community and to properly function as a host venue for world-class events. The new program more than doubles that of the existing facility while maintaining the current footprint for both environmental and view corridor issues. The new aquatics center is organized for maximum flexibility for a wide range of functions and is designed with sustainable concepts. The project utilizes natural light (through a fabric roof membrane) and ventilation from the temperate Southern California climate, as well as produces some of it's own electricity through various methods.
The metaphor of the wave shaped roof is a reflection of the facility's function as a pool and the relevancy of its location at the beach. The two-way curve in the roof describes a waves motion as both a section from the side and in elevation as it crashes at the shore. The focus of the high interior space is the diving tower, an element that artfully combines all of the required diving platforms and boards into a piece of sculpture. A transparent beach facade allows the Pacific Ocean to become the striking backdrop to the dramatic indoor space created by the undulating roof. This Project is currently undergoing feasibility studies by the city.
